Strength and Conditioning

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: is a grappling based, primarily ground fighting martial art, founded by the Gracie family in the 1930's. After starting judo, Helio Gracie found it needed a lot of strength. He was of a smaller frame, and developed a system that was based on leverage rather than strength. It's an art of positions, posture and pressure, and works on joint manipulation and chokes.

MMA stands for mixed martial art. It is a mixture of all the martial arts into one style, and it takes the best from boxing, Muay Thai, kick boxing, wrestling, judo, grappling, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand, and is a form of kick boxing with clinch work, elbows and knees. It is called the art of the 8 limbs and has some of the most devastating strikes in martial arts.

Ninjutsu is a 1000 year old Japanese martial art, that was based on strategy and guerrilla warfare. It teaches punching, kicking, and throwing techniques, but also weapons and strategy.

Self protection teaches basic striking and locking techniques, but also planning and awareness , and knowing what to look out for without being paranoid.

Strength and conditioning at the Shinobi Academy is unlike a gym based program in that we tailor make it to suit the mixed martial artist; it is as much about building a strong inner core as it is a conditioned outer body. Some of the equipment that we have you will recognize from a traditional gym set-up, however, we are focussed more on sports specificity, and for this we include training with kettle bells, the TRX and RIP60 apparatus, as well as the traditional Olympic bar and standard dumb bell techniques for lifting. This type of training is an important addition to our mixed martial arts fitness program.
